The Routt National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape along the border of Routt and Jackson Counties. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trl winds through the center of the sheet, tracing the crest that separates the headwaters of the Middle Fork Little Snake River to the west from the drainage of the Encampment River to the east. This 2022 survey documents a remote alpine environment where transport is defined by a network of footpaths and pack routes, including the Whiskey Creek Trl and Manzanares Trl. High-mountain features such as Black Mtn and Buck Mtn overlook a series of small, isolated water bodies like West Fork Lake and the Sanchez Lakes. The presence of several meadows and parks, such as West Fork Meadows and Big Red Park, suggests the grazing and seasonal transit patterns common to this section of the Sierra Madre.
