United States and Mexico border territory defines this arid landscape near the southeastern corner of Arizona. The desert terrain is characterized by seasonal drainage patterns, most notably Cottonwood Creek in the northwest and the winding path of Hay Hollow Wash. Human infrastructure is sparse in this borderland region, centered primarily around the presence of Guadalupe Canyon Rd which crosses through the northeastern corner. This 2011 survey captures the area's transition into the foothills of the Peloncillo Mountains, where ephemeral washes and primitive roads provide the only reliable landmarks for navigation along the international line.
