Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument dominates the northwestern corner of this territory, protecting a landscape defined by sharp elevation changes and significant watersheds. The terrain rises steeply at Kelloch Mtn and Whetstone Mtn, which overlook a network of glacial waterways and drainage systems. To the south, the expansive waters of Millinocket Lake border the edge of Millinocket Ridge, signaling the transition from the high peaks to the flatter, marshy lowlands characterized by Little Mud Brook and the Mud Brook Flowage. Remote timber and access roads such as Stacyville Rd and Swift Brook Rd provide the primary corridors through this timber-rich region. The drainage patterns of Trout Brook and Sandbank Stream reveal the intricate hydrology of Penobscot County, where isolated water bodies like Little Soldier Pond and Mud Pond are connected by seasonal brooks.
