The Wild River Wilderness and the surrounding White Mountain National Forest dominate this landscape, which straddles the high peaks and steep drainages of the White Mountains along the New Hampshire and Maine border. A significant portion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the northern section, following ridges past Mid Moriah Mtn and Shelburne Moriah Mtn. This area is defined by its complex hydrology, where the Wild River and Mad River carve deep valleys through the granite terrain.
