The East Fork White River carves a dramatic path through Lawrence and Martin Counties, defining the landscape around the settlement of Williams. In the late 1950s, the river was a central artery for the region, crossed by the Williams Bridge and paralleled by the tracks of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific railroad. The map reveals a deeply etched topography of ridges and hollows, much of it protected within the Hoosier National Forest and the Mitchell Tree National Forest.
