About this map

Lancaster and Belmont anchor this specialized nineteenth-century survey, which documents the topographical work of the Geological Survey of Arkansas prior to its incorporation into the standard national series. The landscape is defined by the significant drainage basin of Mulberry Creek and its many tributaries, including Little Mulberry Creek and Simpson Br.. Local settlements like Graphic and Pleasant Hill are shown at a time when their location was dictated by the high Ridge terrain and proximity to water sources like Fines Spr.. This particular sheet represents a rare transitional cartographic record, featuring data originally gathered by state surveyors under the direction of J.W. Powell and topographer Henry Gannett, providing a unique view of the region before more standardized contour intervals were adopted for the later atlas sheets.
