The Ottauquechee River carves through the northern landscape of this Vermont region, connecting the historic hubs of West Woodstock and Bridgewater. Much of the central and southwestern terrain is defined by the high, wooded elevations of the Calvin Coolidge State Forest, a landscape punctuated by peaks like Old Baldy Mtn and Fletcher Hill. The valley corridors reveal a dense history of small settlements and transit, where both an Iron Bridge and a Covered Bridge span the river near West Woodstock. This area is rich for genealogical research, containing numerous small burial grounds including Shaw Cem, Kendall Cem, and Mendall Cem. To the south, the village of South Woodstock serves as a junction for local travel along Kedron Brook, while the township of Reading shows a pattern of upland farming and small crossroads such as Townsend Corners and Chase Corners.
