The Piute Mountains dominate this high-elevation landscape within the Sequoia National Forest, where the terrain is marked by a complex system of drainages and seasonal meadows. Industry and early settlement are evidenced by the site of Moreland Mill and the flat at Alaska Flat, located near the southern extent of the survey. The geography is defined by prominent summits such as Nicolls Peak and Heald Peak, which overlook numerous deep cuts including Bright Star Canyon and Cortez Canyon.
