The Kiowa National Grassland dominates this high plains landscape of Northeastern New Mexico, where the boundaries of Colfax and Harding counties intersect. The region is defined by a series of intermittent watercourses and drainages, including Sauz Cr, Salado Cr, and Arroyo Ojo Verde, which feed into the central Abbott Lake. This water network supported early ranching and settlement, evidenced by the presence of the Craft Ranch and Case Ranch along with the isolated Johnson Cem to the north.
