Baxter State Park and the southern slopes of Mt Katahdin dominate this landscape in the Maine woods. This late 1980s survey captures a wilderness oriented around complex water systems and topographic extremes. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the western portion of the quadrangle, crossing Foss and Knowlton Brook and passing near the Abol Deadwater Campground.

Downstream from the high peaks, the Penobscot River Deadwater and the Debsconeag Deadwater form a maze of lakes and sluggish channels. Several major drops are recorded, including Pockwockamus Falls and Debsconeag Falls. The map details the transition from high mountain terrain like Abol Mtn to the low-lying wetlands around Pockwockamus Pond and Passagamet Lake, connected by forest roads and transmission lines that provide the only signs of modern infrastructure in this preserved region.
