Glacial prairie potholes and wetlands dominate this portion of Walsh County, much of which is preserved within the National Waterfowl Production Area. The landscape is organized by the rural townships of Dewey, Adams, Shepherd, Latona, Sauter, and Perth, reflecting the grid-based settlement pattern of the Northern Plains in the early 1970s. The Middle Branch Forest River winds through the eastern sections, providing the primary drainage for the surrounding fields.
