Akaska sits on the edge of the Missouri River plateau in Walworth County, overlooking the eastern reaches of Lake Oahe. This landscape is defined by the drainage patterns of Swan Cr, Rieger Cr, and Pero Cr, which cut through the undulating prairie towards the Missouri. The settlement pattern follows a rigid section-line grid of rural routes such as Swan Creek Rd and Triple U Rd. A notable point of historical interest is the Old Zion Cem, located in the northern reaches of the quadrangle near the Walworth-Campbell county line. The map captures the agricultural character of the region, where township boundaries like t122n r78w and t121n r77w organize the high plains before they descend into the river breaks.
