The small settlement of Alfred stands on the high ground of the Missouri Coteau in this contemporary topographic record of North Dakota. This landscape is defined by its glacial prairie potholes and conservation land, notably the multi-unit Logan County Waterfowl Production Area and portions of the Lamoure County Waterfowl Production Area. These areas protect critical wetlands and the drainage of Cottonwood Creek in a region where the section-line road network, including 55th St SE and 65th Ave SE, creates a geometric grid over the undulating terrain.
