Bitterroot National Forest and Salmon National Forest meet along the high-elevation divide of the Montana-Idaho border, a landscape defined by sharp ridges and deep drainage systems. The northern half of the map is dominated by the steep slopes of Allan Mountain and Rocky Mountain, while the southern reaches fall away toward the West Fork Hughes Creek.

Resource extraction and backcountry navigation are the primary human markers in this wilderness. Multiple industrial sites, including a Mine Shaft, various Prospects, and prominent areas of Tailings, indicate a history of mineral exploration along the gulches. Transportation is limited to rugged routes like the Ax Park Way Trail and unnamed 4wd tracks that follow the contours of Butcherknife Ridge and lead toward the river flat at Salzer Bar.
