About this map

Noatak National Preserve encompasses most of this 1990 provisional study, depicting an Arctic landscape defined by braided river systems and high alpine terrain. The Noatak River meanders across the northern and central sections, joined by tributaries including the Aniuk River and the winding Imelyak River. These waterways reveal a shifting hydrological environment, with numerous small lakes and wet areas scattered across the tundra.

In the southeastern portion, the elevation rises sharply into the Akikhaak Peaks, providing a stark contrast to the low-lying river basins. The inclusion of the Amakomanak Cr and the designated Noatak Wilderness boundaries reflects the conservation status of the Brooks Range foothills during the late twentieth century. As a provisional map, it captures the raw topography and drainage patterns based on aerial photography from the late 1970s, before field checking or modern road development altered the cartographic record of this area.
