Deep mining and coal infrastructure dominate the landscape of the Adkin District in this late 1960s study of the West Virginia-Virginia border. The industrial presence is marked by numerous Strip Mines, Mine Dumps, and Tailings Ponds that follow the winding ridges of the Appalachians. The Norfolk and Western railway threads through the valleys, connecting specialized coal camps and settlements like Anawalt, Pageton, and Jenkinjones.

Along the southern edge, the terrain transitions from the industrial activity of the coalfields into the more linear topography of Stone Ridge and Abbs Valley Ridge. This area contains a mix of community landmarks, including the Abbs Valley-Boissevain Sch and several small rural churches like Sky Ch and Heads Ch.
