The Matanuska Glacier dominates the southern portion of this landscape, its expansive ice field feeding the headwaters of the Matanuska River. This high-elevation terrain is defined by dramatic geological formations, including the prominent Lion Head and Glacier Point that overlook the river valley. The corridor is carved by numerous watercourses such as Caribou Creek and Rock Glacier Cr, which descend from the high ridges like Fortress Ridge toward the canyon floor.
