Horse Basin and Grassy Ridge define the high ground of this high-desert landscape on the border of Harney and Malheur counties. This 2014 survey documents a sparsely settled region of the Oregon Outback where water sources are the primary landmarks for navigation and land use. The namesake Ancient Lake Well is situated in the southern reach of the quadrangle, serving as a critical point of interest in an area largely devoid of formal infrastructure. To the southeast, the terrain descends toward the bed of Coyote Lk, illustrating the typical terminal drainage patterns of the Great Basin. The map clearly delineates the Harney and Malheur County boundary, which bisects the western half of the sheet, providing a precise record of administrative divisions in this open country.
