The Little Missouri River and the Belle Fourche River both flow through this high-plains landscape along the border of Montana and Wyoming. The terrain is defined by a dense network of intermittent drainages and named draws, such as Foster Draw and Arrowhead Gulch, that feed into these larger river systems. A significant landmark in the northern portion is the T J Maupin Number 1 Reservoir, serving as a vital water source for the surrounding rangeland.
