Little Costilla Peak and Ash Mtn define the high elevations of the Cimarron Range along the boundary between Taos and Colfax counties. This high-country landscape is shaped by the complex drainage systems of Middle Ponil Cr and McCrystal Cr, which flow through deep cuts like Powderhouse Canyon and past the distinctive geological formation known as The Rock Wall. Settlement is sparse and focused on seasonal use and conservation, evidenced by McCrystal Place and the facilities at Shuree. Recreational and agricultural heritage is present throughout the Valle Vidal, with established sites such as the Shuree Lodge, Cimarron Campground, and the Clayton Corral. The map documents a rugged interior of northern New Mexico where old ranching sites and modern forest management intersect at landmarks like Windy Gap and Elk Meadows.
