1982 Map of Wheeler Peak

About this map

Wheeler Peak and the high ridges of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains dominate this survey, which captures the complex intersection of federal land, indigenous territory, and historic private grants. The eastern slopes are defined by the massive Maxwell Land Grant and Beaubien and Miranda tracts, while the south reveals the boundaries of the Taos Pueblo Indian Reservation. Evidence of late 19th-century resource extraction remains visible in the high country, where the Deep Tunnel Mine and French-Henry Mine sit near the former mining hub of Elizabethtown. To the west, the volcanic landforms of the Taos Plateau, including Cerro de la Olla, rise above the Rio Grande. The landscape transitions from the agricultural settlements of Arroyo Hondo and Questa to the recreational and ranching areas of the Philmont Scout Ranch and Eagle Nest Lake.
