Ashburn and the riverfront landings of the Mississippi River define this riverine landscape along the border of Missouri and Illinois. The terrain is a complex network of chutes and sloughs, including Gilbert Chute and Swain Slough, which isolate large landmasses like Gilbert Island and Denmark Island. On the Missouri side, the bluffs rising from the riverbank are punctuated by several historic burial sites, such as Early Cemetery, Schindler Cemetery, and Ashburn Cemetery, providing significant data for genealogical research in both Ralls and Pike Counties.
