About this map

Avalon and the surrounding Georgia-South Carolina border country are defined by the winding course of the Tugaloo River valley, now partly occupied by the waters of Hartwell Lake. The terrain transitions from the protected timberlands of the Chattahoochee National Forest in the northwest toward the rolling agricultural lands of Stephens County. Early settlement patterns are visible in the high density of family and community burial grounds, such as Rust Cem, Tugalo Cem, and the Chauga Baptist Church Graveyard.
