The Casselman River and its numerous tributaries define this pocket of the Allegheny Mountains along the Maryland and Pennsylvania border. Centered on the settlement of Avilton, the landscape is a series of high ridges including Meadow Mtn, Chestnut Ridge, and Big Savage Mtn. The historic National Pike serves as a primary east-west artery, connecting the communities of Piney Grove and Little Meadows. Researchers will find a high concentration of burial sites throughout the rural countryside, such as Saint Anns Cem, Merrbach Cem, and Mt Zion Cem, often situated near small crossroads or family landholdings. To the south, New Germany Lake and its surrounding parkland offer a focal point for the region's interior drainage, where waters from Poplar Lick Run and Red Ridge gather before feeding into the Savage River system.
