The agricultural landscape of northwest Avoca in Shelby County is defined by a grid of county roads and the winding paths of several waterways. Silver Creek and Middle Silver Creek traverse the central and western portions of the quadrangle, eventually feeding into the larger river systems of western Iowa. A small segment of the West Nishnabotna River appears in the southeastern corner, while Slocum Creek drains the southern fields.
