About this map

The Union Pacific railroad cuts a straight diagonal across this high basin, marking the industrial lifeline through the Escalante Desert during the mid-twentieth century. To the southwest, the Antelope Range rises sharply from the desert floor, featuring the prominent Three Peaks and the high vantage of Upper Pt. The drainage patterns of the arid landscape are clearly defined by the Dick Palmer Wash, Tucker Wash, and Iron Springs Creek, which channel seasonal runoff toward the desert basin. A series of scattered Windmill symbols indicate the vital water infrastructure necessary for ranching and survival in this dry interior. Transport through the area is anchored by the Antelope Road, which skirts the northern edge of the mountains, connecting the open flats of the desert to the higher terrain.
