About this map

Laramie River winds through the southeastern corner of this Albany County landscape, defined by high-altitude ranching and livestock infrastructure from the mid-1950s. The presence of Ayres Spring (Historical) points to an earlier era of natural water sources that once sustained travelers and homesteaders in this semi-arid environment. The terrain transitions from the steep walls of Box Canyon and the prominent elevation of Red Hill in the west to a more open, lake-dotted plateau in the south. Connectivity across these flats is maintained by the historic Fetterman Road and Garrett Road, which follow the contours of the land rather than a strict grid. Numerous Windmill symbols are scattered throughout, indicating the essential role of wind-pumped groundwater for sustaining herds away from the primary flow of Sevenmile Creek.
