The Owyhee River winds through this high-desert ranching landscape in northern Elko County, where isolated cattle operations define the region's human geography. Byington Ranch and the nearby Byington Ranch Airport serve as central hubs for activity in the northwest, while Hansen Ranch, Thompson Ranch, and Baker Ranch are spaced along the foothills of the Independence Mountains. The terrain is deeply incised by a network of seasonal and perennial waters, including Badger Creek, Beaver Creek, and the North Fork Deep Creek.
