Bald Mountain Pond and the surrounding high ground of Piscataquis and Somerset counties dominate this part of the Maine North Woods. The landscape is defined by its water and relief, where the West Branch Piscataquis River and Bald Mountain Stream carve through the terrain near Blue Top and Breakneck Ridge. The prominent Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the southern portion of the quadrangle, crossing several brooks and passing near the secluded Hatch Falls.
