The Sierra National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape where the San Joaquin River and its S Fork San Joaquin River carve through the Sierra Nevada. The terrain is characterized by dramatic granite formations and alpine clearings, most notably the rounded profile of Balloon Dome and the peak of Mt Tom. This 2015 survey reveals a wilderness area largely inaccessible by standard roads, instead marked by the Cassidy Bridge and various high-mountain meadows like Cow Meadow and Crater Lake Meadow.
