Barela and its surrounding high-altitude terrain define this 2019 survey of the Las Animas County borderlands. The small settlement is situated near Barela Cem and the confluence of San Francisco Cr and Ocaña Cr, in a landscape dominated by the expansive Barela Mesa. This region is characterized by a dense network of water sources, including high-country features like Laguna Negra, Big Lake, and the numbered basins of Walton Lake Number 1 through Walton Lake Number 4.
