Lake Chippewa dominates the western half of this Sawyer County landscape, a massive flowage created by the impoundment of the Northwoods river system. At the southern edge of the reservoir, the Winter Dam and the Chippewa Reservoir 1911C640 Dam manage the water levels of the Chippewa River, where the East Fork and West Fork converge. The area is defined by its complex hydrology, with numerous smaller water bodies such as Two Axe Lake, Barker Lake, and Little Cranberry Lake scattered among a network of Forest Service roads.

The confluence of these waterways and the presence of features like Wagon Wheel Island suggest a landscape heavily shaped by 20th-century hydraulic engineering and forest management.
