Fremont National Forest dominates this landscape in southern Oregon, where the high-altitude terrain is defined by a network of seasonal water sources and expansive flats. The topography transitions from the open stretches of Squaw Flat and Little Squaw Flat in the north toward the central drainage of Barnes Valley. This area serves as a critical watershed, evidenced by the numerous springs including Pitch Log Spring, Mallard Spring, and Burnt Log Spring that feed into Pitch Log Creek and Barnes Valley Creek. The presence of Lower Fishhole and Middle Fishhole near the northern boundary suggests the importance of these wetlands in a semi-arid forest environment. A network of Forest Service and BLM roads, such as Barnes Valley Road and National Forest Development Road 3752, provides access through the timbered sections and across the county line between Klamath and Lake counties.
