The valley floor is defined by a dense transportation corridor, featuring the Boston and Albany Railroad and the Central Massachusetts Railroad which converge near Barre Plains. These rail lines were the lifeblood for local industry, connecting settlements like Old Furnace and Gilbertville to larger markets.

Upland areas are characterized by numerous family-named peaks, such as Whortleberry Hill and Mandell Hill, which overlook scattered hamlets including Nichewaug and New Braintree. To the west, the East Branch of Swift River and Pottapaug Pond mark a geography that would later be fundamentally altered by twentieth-century water projects.
