In the early 1950s, the river valley served as a critical transportation corridor, hosting three major rail lines: the Lehigh Valley RR, the Erie RR, and the Delaware Lackawanna and Western RR. These lines bracket the settlements of Barton and Smithboro, while the village of Nichols sits just south of the river bend.

Upland from the valley floor, the terrain rises toward peaks like Prospect Hill and East Whitcomb Hill, where a more dispersed rural life is documented. Scattered schoolhouses and churches, such as Frost Hollow Sch and Asbury Ch, appear alongside numerous family and community burial grounds including Barton Cem and Beavers Meadows Cem. This survey preserves the mid-century layout of small hamlets like Glencairn and Ellis Town before modern highway developments altered the local character.
