About this map

Bassville and the surrounding rural landscape of Greene County are defined by a network of small schools and churches that served this farming community in the late 1940s. The terrain is deeply carved by the Little Sac River and the Little Pomme de Terre River, creating a distinctive drainage pattern that influenced the placement of early infrastructure. Local education and social life centered on numerous district buildings such as Hickory Barren Sch, Liberty Sch, and Whitlock Sch, most of which were located at key road intersections. To the south, the St Louis San Francisco railroad cuts across the corner of the quadrangle near Valley Water Mills, marking the edge of the expanding industrial reach from the nearby urban center. The survey captures a moment when the rural townships of Franklin, Jackson, and North Campbell still maintained their traditional mid-century character.
