The Namekagon River and the St Croix National Scenic Riverway anchor this pocket of the Wisconsin Northwoods, where the landscape is a complex network of wetlands and glacial lakes. In the early 1970s, the region was characterized by large-scale conservation efforts, visible in the contiguous blocks of the Flat Creek State Wildlife Management Area, the Bass Lake State Wildlife Management Area, and the Bean Brook State Wildlife Management Area.

Industry and transport intersect with this natural terrain through the Chicago and North Western rail line and a prominent pipeline corridor crossing north to south. Notable local features include a Cranberry Bog near the river bend and numerous named water bodies such as Bean Lake, Beaver Lake, and Colbroth Lake. The map also captures the Washburn and Sawyer County boundary line as it cuts through the marshy interior east of Mud Lake.
