The high-altitude drainage of San Isabel National Forest dominates this landscape along the border of Custer and Huerfano counties. The area is defined by a network of steep canyons and water sources, including the prominent Devils Hole and the convergence of the North Fork Bear Creek and South Fork Bear Creek. Human activity is primarily limited to resource extraction and backcountry movement, evidenced by numerous Prospects scattered across the northern slopes and the Horse Ranch Trail cutting through the forest interior.
