Lake Koocanusa defines the western edge of this terrain within the Kootenai National Forest, where the reservoir's waters meet the eastern foothills of the Purcell Mountains. The landscape is a network of drainage basins and peaks, including the prominent Beartrap Mtn and Helmer Mtn. A complex system of forest development roads, such as Pinkham Rd and Nat For Dev Rd 7384, provides access to the interior highlands and water bodies like Phills Lake and Rock Lake.
