The high-altitude drainage systems of Uncompahgre National Forest define this 2019 survey along the boundary of San Miguel and Dolores counties. Dominated by the soaring elevation of Lone Cone Peak, the landscape is etched with a complex network of man-made irrigation features. Gravity-fed waterways such as Gurley Ditch, W Beaver Highline Ditch, and the Old Nelson Ditch demonstrate the historical engineering required to move water across the plateau for ranching and agriculture.
