Wet Mountain Valley dominates the eastern portion of this high-altitude landscape, where the flatlands of the valley floor meet the dramatic rise of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Evidence of early mountain commerce and ranching is visible at Henrich Ranch and the isolated Beck School, which served the scattered families of the valley's western edge. The rugged western terrain is largely protected within the San Isabel National Forest, defined by a series of high summits including Blizzardine Peak, Huckleberry Mountain, and Snowslide Mountain.
