The settlement of Marathon anchors the northeastern corner of this West Texas landscape, where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the uplift of the Beckwith Hills. The area is defined by its drainages, with Alsate Cr and Peña Colorada Cr cutting through the terrain, the latter supported by the Peña Colorada Spring. To the south, the topography grows more complex around Little Road Canyon and the Payne Hills, while Monument Cr marks the lower reaches of the survey.
