Lake Superior dominates this northeastern reach of Isle Royale, where a complex network of narrow channels and rocky outcroppings defines the Keweenaw County wilderness. The landscape is characterized by its linear islands and bays, including the long stretches of Amygdaloid Island and Belle Isle. These natural harbors provided critical shelter for maritime travelers, as evidenced by the namesake Belle Harbor and the intricate passage of Amygdaloid Channel.
