Isle Royale National Park dominates this northern stretch of the Keweenaw archipelago, where the jagged northeast-southwest orientation of the volcanic bedrock creates a landscape of parallel ridges and deep water inlets. The prominent Greenstone Ridge forms the island's interior backbone, rising toward Mt Franklin and overlooking a complex network of sheltered waterways. Along the coastline, narrow harbors like Tobin Harbor, Rock Harbor, and Belle Harbor provide refuge from the open waters of Lake Superior. Numerous smaller landforms, including Belle Isle, Fisher Island, and Diamond Island, dot the surrounding waters, illustrating the fragmented shoreline and submerged reefs such as Congdon Shoal that have long challenged Lake Superior navigation.
