The Chena River meanders across the northern portion of this landscape, its path defined by sharp oxbows and the nearby drainage of Mullen Slough. South of the river valley, the terrain rises sharply into the high ridges of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, where several seasonal waterways like Horner Cr, Flat Cr, and Hunts Cr have carved steep drainages. This 2016 survey shows the edge of Alaskan interior settlement, characterized by a sparse grid of residential and local access roads. Roads such as Pheasant Farm Road, Pleasant Valley Road, and the more remote Steve Savage Trail indicate the gradual push of rural development into the upland wilderness. The transition from the flat, marshy lowlands of the river to the high-elevation contours to the south highlights the physical challenges faced by local inhabitants in this subarctic environment.
