Billys Island and the surrounding wetlands define this modern survey of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, where the border of Charlton and Ware counties cuts through the heart of the Okefenokee Swamp. The landscape is a complex network of tea-colored waterways and wooded rises, including Honey Island, New Island, and Bugaboo Island. For genealogists and historians, the presence of the Lee Cem on the northern edge of the island provides a rare point of human settlement history within the protected Okefenokee Wilderness.
