The Bitterroot River floodplains and the adjacent elevated Sunset Bench define the landscape of this portion of Ravalli County in the late 1960s. The region is characterized by a sophisticated water management system designed for mountain-valley agriculture, featuring the Bitterroot Irrigation District Canal and numerous smaller channels such as the Union Ditch and Side Highway Ditch. These artificial waterways parallel the natural flow of McCalla Cr and the complex drainage of South Swamp Creek.
