Black Butte and its prominent Lookout House dominate the southeastern landscape of this Jefferson and Deschutes County border region. The area is defined by the headwaters of the Metolius River, which emerges from the ground at Metolius Spring and flows north past a concentration of recreational sites. The settlement of Camp Sherman serves as a hub for travelers, surrounded by numerous designated areas like the Smiling River Campground and Allingham F S Station.

To the west, the drainage of Lake Creek feeds from Suttle Lake, a primary water body supporting the Suttle Lake F S Station and several lakeside camps. The transition from industrial uses, evidenced by scattered Gravel Pits and a Sewage Disposal Plant, to recreational management within the Deschutes National Forest is clear. An old Wagon Road and the established Black Butte Ranch further illustrate the layer of historical land use in this timber and volcanic terrain.
