The rugged shoreline of Lake Superior meets the densely forested interior of the Ottawa National Forest in this coastal survey. The most striking characteristic of this landscape is the concentration of water features along the Black River, which descends toward the lake through a series of named cataracts including Potawatomi Falls, Gorge Falls, and Great Conglomerate Falls. These falls, along with Rainbow Falls and Sandstone Falls closer to the coast, mark the dramatic drop of the watershed as it nears Black River Harbor.
