Dolly Sods and the high plateau of the Allegheny Front dominate this landscape along the border of Tucker and Grant counties. The terrain is defined by a dense network of high-elevation watercourses, including the north-flowing Stony River and the headwaters of Red Creek, which carve through the elevations of Cabin Mtn and Blackbird Knob. Large portions of the area are managed as the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Monongahela National Forest, reflecting a geography largely dedicated to conservation and backcountry recreation.

Transportation is primarily restricted to a complex system of footpaths and forest roads, such as the American Discovery Trail and Dobbin Grade Trail, which cross the bogs and rocky outcrops of the sods. To the east, the settlement of Jordan Run sits along Jordan Run Rd near the base of the Fore Knobs, where the dramatic relief of the eastern continental divide creates a sharp transition from the wetland-rich plateau to the steep valley slopes below.
